Race caps are a legend of speed that Futurists had in common but they received strong blows from derbies and top hats. A leather cap, with goggles fastened on top of the visor, was the headwear of those who wanted to taste the thrill of a motorcycle race.
The Bonnet, a chequered cap in heavy Irish tweed was most suited for drivers of the new automobiles. Giacomo Balla, together with Marinetti and Boccioni, gave life to a Futuristic Movement and created a polygonal hat. With this, caps had their moment of glory in the competitive sport spirit that accompanied the religion of speed. 1
